Consequences of Drug Addiction

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) website, persistent drug abuse by young people often leads to the following:

Academic Difficulties:

Based on the NHSDA Report "Marijuana use among youths, SAMHSA 2002" report, teens with an average grade of "D" or below were more than four times as likely to have used marijuana in the past year as youths who reported an average grade of "A". Additionally according to the Office of Applied Studies, SAMHSA, 1998 report students who have smoked marijuana within the past year are more than twice as likely to cut class as those who did not smoke, while health problems associated with using marijuana can keep students from attending school due to illness.

Health Related Problems:

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) resources mental health problems include depression, conduct problems, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide and suicide. Involvement With The Juvenile Justice System:

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, adolescents age 12 to 17 who use marijuana weekly are nine times more likely than non-users to experiment with other illegal drugs or alcohol, five times more likely to steal and nearly four times more likely to engage in violence. ONDCP states that arrest, adjudication, and intervention by the juvenile justice system are eventual consequences for many youth engaged in drug use. The statistics that support this statement comes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to the FBI, there were 137,658 juveniles (under the age of 18) arrested by State and local law enforcement agencies for drug abuse violations during 2003, representing 11.7% of the drug arrests in which the offender's age was reported; additionally, during FY 2002, approximately 2.3% (675) of those arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) were under the age of 19.
