The biggest mistake the parents make about youth drug abuse is to assume that their child will not use drugs.

According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) sponsored annual survey;

high school seniors reported using an illicit drug in the previous month was 25.7% in 2001. That means among 4 high school seniors 1 used illicit drugs.
Same study states that in 2001, past month marijuana use among 12th, 10th, and 8th graders was estimated at 22.4%, 19.8%, and 9.2%, respectively.
Teenagers start using drugs for various reasons which might not be related to the social status and the wealth of the parents.

The reasons for drug abuse include:

-to be accepted by friends,
-lack of hobbies (boredom),
-social influence (media effect),
-physical and mental addiction,
-relief of stress,
-curiosity,
-rebelling to parents, teachers
