Drug abuse at young ages is the cause of many negative consequences at every aspect of drug abused teens' lives. These drug abuse consequences include failure at school; increased risk for violence, theft and unsafe sexual relationships; grave danger for long period drug addiction; increased possibility of accidents due to lack of necessary judgment, finally and most importantly increased tendency for suicide.
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) website, persistent drug abuse by young people often leads to the following:
- -Academic Difficulties
- -Health related problems including mental health
- -Poor peer relationships
- -Involvement with the juvenile justice system
According to ONDCP's resources mental health problems include depression, conduct problems, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide and suicide. For instance, Marijuana interfere with short-term memory, learning and psychomotor skills.
ONDCP states that arrest, adjudication, and intervention by the juvenile justice system are eventual consequences for many youth engaged in alcohol and other drug use. The statistics that support this statement comes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). According to the FBI, there were 137,658 juveniles (under the age of 18) arrested by State and local law enforcement agencies for drug abuse violations during 2003, representing 11.7% of the drug arrests in which the offender's age was reported.
